Deforestation then and now

In the Roman period, most common buildings were made of wood. When the population grew the trees and forest declined. Once you run out of trees where you live, you have to buy it from the next closest place, and when you use up all he wood there, you have to get it some where else, making it harder and harder to get wood. It also resulted in climate change, soil erosion, flooding, run off, and weakened farm land.

In current time in Canada we don't have a deforestation issue. The law in Canada is you are only allowed to cut down 1% of forests each year, and plant new ones in their place.

Ancient Egypt was a hereditary monarchy. When The Pharaoh dies his oldest son takes his place, but if the son it too young to rule the mother runs the country in her sons name until he is of age. If there is no son then the mother rules, and when she dies the closest male relative becomes pharaoh. The word pharaoh meant “great house” and was referring to the palace where the king lived, but soon became the name of the ruler.

Ancient Egypt’s military was strong, though they did lose some wars. They learned from there mistakes. Before the new kingdom, young boys could pick a more secure job rather than a job in the military, but in the new kingdom, boys where sometimes forced. Ancient Egypt’s military used weapons such as bows, spears, rocks, slings, clubs, and growing sticks. Chariots where used to ride into battle. It was armed with a driver and a archer. Mercenaries where paid solders, but if they where paid more they would fight for the other side. 

The government officials worked directly for the king, this included, advisers, priests, wiremen, and the army chief. The government officials and the pyramid builders got paid with onions and garlic. The religious officials helped the pharaoh make decisions because it helped maintain peace. People in the lower class such as merchants, artisans, farmers and slaves. Ancient Egypt government is very interesting and fun to learn about. 

Justice system 

Ancient Egypt was a very religious country, they believed in many gods including Amun, Horus, Bastet and many others. They thought that these gods controlled the elements of nature. Pharaohs where the kings and law givers of Egypt. There where many punishments in ancient Egypt like 100 - 200 blows with sticks, cutting off the nose or ears and forced labor. The death sentence was rare because they where saved for worse crimes like attempted assassination of the pharaoh or tomb robbery. The forced labor punishment was also directed towards the criminals family. The had to work for as long as ten to twenty years. There was no official judge, there was no such thing as a judge in there language, but in the new kingdom they had officials that where called kenbet, and they acted like judges. Slaves where put into slavery if they could not pay off there debts or they would even sell themselves into slavery to get out of poverty.

Language & Learning 

Hieroglyphics are a form of writing used in ancient Egypt. It was mostly used for important or religious text. Only scribes where allowed to read and write. Scribes where men who learned how to read and write at a special school for scribes, but it was very difficult to learn all those symbols. In order to become a scribe you had to be a son of a scribe, or some times a craftsmen could get his son into the scribe school, but that was rare. It could take 3 - 5 years to finish scribe school. 

The Rosetta stone is a very important relic from ancient Egypt. It was found in Rosetta (Rashid) in Egypt, thats why it is called the Rosetta Stone. It was found by Napoleons solders in 1799. It is super important because before we found it, we had a hard time translating hieroglyphics intel the Rosetta Stone. We only figured hieroglyphics because on the Rosetta Stone it was the same story written three times in three different  scripts, hieroglyphics, demonic, and greek, comparing hieroglyphics to the other languages. 

In ancient Egypt a year was 365 days with 30 days in a month with 5 extra days. Papyrus were thin pieces of paper like sheets made from papyrus plant, it was one of the first forms of paper. Pyramids were made mostly made of lie stone. No one really knows how the lime stone blocks got raised to make a pyramid, but people think it was by ramps because wooden ramps have been found near pyramids. 

Egyptians believed that they got sick because there gods where angry, so doctors would pray and preform rituals on the sick. They also surprisingly new a lot about the body, but they had weird remedies and medicines like how they used cow and horse hooves to make tooth paste and they used putrid donkey liver as black hair dye.

When they first started to mummify a dead body was because they thought it was uncomfortable for there loved ones to be buried in the sand so they used woven baskets then developed to wooden coffins. But then the bacteria in the body was contained and decomposed the body, so the Egyptians tried rapping them in linen but it did not work. Eventually they figured out that the bacteria lives mostly in there organs, this is why they took the organs out and put them in jars. Learning about hoe Egyptians learn is very interesting.

Dear Mr Fuhr,

     Congratulations on becoming an MP. 

     I have some concerns about oceanic pollution. I believe that this problem is getting serious. Soon the ocean is going to be so full of chemicals and toxins that it will cause fish and other organisms to die, water will no longer safe to drink, and coral reefs will disappear. The toxic build up in fish is slowly poisoning our bears. The whole earth relies on the ocean’s ecosystems, if those systems collapse almost every other ecosystem will also fail. I think this problem can be fixed with some work and time.

     If we used less harsh chemicals in shampoos and cleaners, natural fertilizers, and were smart about how industry uses water, we could get started on fixing ocean pollution. Maybe to get people motivated to do these things, there could be Government sponsored environmental advertising. We also need more government regulation of toxic chemicals in Canadian manufacturing.These are just some of the things we could do. I hope this letter helps this problem be fixed.

Coral reefs

Coral reefs are one of the most populated habitats in the ocean world. A coral reef has lots of amazing organisms living in and around them. These organisms are biotic (which means living). There are also a-biotic (meaning non-living) things that play a role in coral reefs. Wether it is good or bad, we also have a substantial influence on coral reefs. Coral reefs are very intriguing habitats and organisms. 

Biotic 

Coral is made of little animals call coral polyps. polyps are transparent, but look colourful because of the algae living in side them. This algae gives them most of there energy by preforming photosynthesis so it can provide food for it and its host. Coral polyps, which look a little like a upside down jelly fish, use it’s tentacles to sting and eat small prey. There are many types of coral like, cones, soft coral, hard coral, and etc.  Coral takes years to grow. When multiple kinds of corals live by each other is called a coral reef. Coral reefs are home to many organisms. There are over 1,500 species of fish living in and around coral reefs such as, clown fish, butterfly fish, sea anemones, green turtles, octopi, squid, sea urchins, clams,  sharks, and so many more. But what do they eat? Well lets start at the bottom of the food chain. Plankton for example, makes it own food from the energy of the sun. This is called a producer. Then sea slugs , witch eat plankton , are called herbivorous consumers(herbivores). Then Octopuses, witch eat the sea slugs, are called carnivorous consumers( carnivore). Then sharks, which eat the octopuses, are called secondary carnivorous consumers. That is one of many food chains in coral reefs. 

A-biotic 

Have you ever thought how waves can affect coral reefs? well they do. Waves help wash away waste and bring food like plankton. The temperature, witch is also important, can  be 77 to 84 Fahrenheit ( 25 and 29 celsius).  Coral reefs are found in shallow waters and can be found 60 meters deep ( 197 feet), but some coral such as hermatypic coral can be found deeper than that. Coral reefs, witch are found in warm, clear waters, are near the equator in the tropical zone and are home to 25% of all ocean organisms, covering less than 0.1% of the ocean surface. 

Mans impact 

People use coral reefs in many different ways, for example, coral reefs are good tourist attractions, good fishing spots, and some of the fish are used in aquariums. But a lot of coral reefs are under to climate change, cyanide fishing (for aquarium fish), blast fishing, oceanic acidification, sunscreen use , water pollution( can cause too much algae growth),  and over use of coral resources. But there are ways to fix these problems. And there is way you can help like, try to use natural shampoos and dish soups ( because your water will eventually get into the ocean), reduce, reuse, recycle, try not to litter, and you can learn more about coral reefs and see for your self of what you can do. Coral reefs are very fascinating things to learn about.

Conclusion 

We know lots about coral reefs. We know about how the biotic and a-biotic elements affect them, we also know how we affect them, and how much we need them. But there is still things we do not know about coral reefs.

Mexico Report

Mexico

Mexico is found on the continent of  North America. Mexico has a population of 125 235 000.

It’s capital city is Mexico City with a population of 19 180 000.

Mexico is located between  19° 24' N and 99 ° 09' W  degrees latitude. This is in the deserts and tropical rain forests region . The climate in Mexico is warm and tropical all year round.

Mexico is a place where many people from all over the world visit for vacations, holidays and ext, because of its warm climate. 

Compared to Canada, Mexico has a higher population density. Mexico has lots of big cities like their capital, Mexico City.

Their natural resources include: Silver, petroleum, copper, and timber.

The main jobs available include: Tobacco, chemicals, food and beverages, iron and steel, textiles, and tourism.

Mexico is considered a middle income country with an average income of $850 USD and a literacy rate of  93.1 percent USD.

Mexico’s government is a Federal Republic which means, it is a federation of states with a republican form of government. 

The official language of Mexico is spanish but english is also spoken.

The major religion of Mexico is Roman Catholic but Protestantism and Evangelicalism are also practiced.

I would love to live in Mexico because of the warm wether, the tropical fish, and animals.  But I think that I would like it more if I come to visit instead of living there. I have never gone to Mexico before but I would very much like to because of all the very good stuff I found when researching. 

Extraction from global citizens : Tradition says that the Mexica chose their new home because of a sign from one of their gods. They saw an eagle perched on a cactus eating a snake. This was their sign to build their own city. They called it Tenochtitlan Place of the Cactus.

New and improved Allyera Lie Aquali

                                  Chapter 1

In the Mermaidia Kingdom all the mere-people were getting ready for Princess Allya’s coronation. Every thirty-five years, at noon a new ruler sits upon the throne of the coronation field, carrying the magical Trident of Mermaidia. 

In her room Allya was getting ready to see her friends when her brother burst out from behind her door, hoping to scare her. “Boo!” He hollered.

“Ahh, Brandon!” Allya yelled, throwing her pillow at him. “Leave me alone! Go away before I tell father!”

Brandon crossed his arms sulkily. “I was just trying to have some fun.”

Allya placed the books she was carrying next to her bed. “Well, not right now, I’m getting ready for my coronation.”

Brandon rolled his eyes. “Ya, right. I doubt it.”

Before Allya could respond their father entered the room. “Good morning, my children. Allya, it’s now time for your petition hearings.”

“Aw, but father!” Allya protested. 

“No buts! Your about to be Queen and you need to focus on your duties. And besides, I’ll be right there with you. You need to show your love for the people.”

“I was just about to go hang out with my friends!” Allya complained. “HA!! I was right you weren't getting ready for your coronation, you where going to hang out with your friends!” Brandon smiled annoyingly.  Her father glared at her. She gave a sigh. “Fine.”

The king turned to his son. “And Brandon, head to your schoolroom. You’re late and your tutor’s waiting for you.”

“Alright father.” He said grumpily.

About ten minutes later Allya and King Plankton where seated on their thrones with a long line of people waiting to see them. 

The king held the magical trident in his right hand lowering it so the next mer-person could speak.  

“My King!!” the mer-man  said urgently. “My coral farm has  been destroyed by sharks!

“I see.” the King replied wile stroking his big, white, fluffy beard. “We will send guards to shoo away the sharks and to help you rebuild your farms.”

“Thank you my King, thank you!” The mere-man thanked. 

Allya was startled “Father that was the fifth shark sighting this week!”

Her father frowned “I know, I am sending scouts to find out where they are coming from.”

Several hours later the last person in line approached the thrones. He was hooded and cloaked and riding a mantis ray like you would ride a boat above the water. His hood covered his face and his cloak covered most of his body from view. When he spoke his voice had a slight rasp.

“Your majesty, I have travelled from afar to see you in person! I wanted to  give these to you.” He announced as he gave the king a basket of seaweed rolls. 

The king smiled with thanks. “We will have them for supper tonight!”  

The man smiled under his cloak. 

Allya was not liking the odd man. There was something wrong about him, but she didn't know what.  

The man bowed low, backing out of the door, where, unknown by the king and the princess, he ducked behind a pillar and watched to see what the king would do next. 

King Plankton placed the magical Trident on a coral holder next to his throne designed especially for this purpose. The stranger smiled grimly to himself. 

The king left the room with the guards following him and the man ducked out of sight quickly, making sure he didn't get seen, tipped towed over to the king’s throne and took the trident from its holding place and snuck out of the castle. 

                            Chapter 2   

The next day was the day before Princess Allya’s coronation.

Every one was gathered in the throne room with looks of great surprise on their faces.

Allya rushed into the room. “You called me father?”

Her father turned to her with a look of confusion and anger. “The trident is gone!” 

Allya looked frightened. “What! that can’t be possible, that means I can’t have my coronation!” The king nodded.  Allya looked like she just saw a horror movie. “but that means there wont be a ruler of Mermaidia!” The king nodded again.

King Plankton sent guards to every house in the mermaidia kingdom to find the trident.

Allya went for a swim. She was swimming near the great blue hole ( a trench near Mexico) and saw a shark swimming into it. Allya followed the shark for a while, and it led her to some other sharks. She quickly hid when she heard a voice. 

“Aha, there you are. Did you find any information at the castle?” The dark voice barked. 

Since Allya could speak to ocean animals she heard what the shark had to say. “Yes, your plan worked!”

“Good,” Sharkon replied. “We will send sharks to distract them and head over to the coronation field.”

“Yay!” The sharks cheered.

“You are now King Sharkon!” The first shark aded.Allya gasped, quickly covering her mouth. 

Sharkon looked around. “What was that?” 

“ I…I don’t know sir.” Replied the shark.

“Then find out!!” Yelled Sharkon. Allya swam as fast as she could out of the trench and back to the castle. When she got back she told her father exactly what she had herd.

Then her father realized that he had bean tricked by the cloaked man the other day!

Then he told Allya his plan. They where going to send an army to distract Sharkon and get the trident, then they would get Allya and the trident to the coronation field before it was to late.

                                         Chapter 3

               The next morning (the day of the coronation) Allya got up and hurried to the armer gallery where her father was getting on his armer. “Here put this on.” He passed her a breastplate. “You need it so you don’t get hurt.” 

Allya put it on and a helmet that was placed on the wall. She sighed. “Do you think I am ready?” She asked.

Her father smiled lovingly. “Yes” He answered. “But we need to go get Sharkon if you what to be queen.” He added jokingly. “Let’s go” 

King plankton already had the army in there armer and on there water unicorns. They swam to the coronation field and saw Sharkon sitting on the throne. He frowned and appeared very upset, shaking his fist at the shark beside him. Luckily for him he also had a army of sharks just in case. 

“Charge!!!” Yelled King Plankton, swimming the other direction so he could find a safe spot for Allya to stay for the time being. 

Allya watch the war go on for hours behind a rock.

King Plankton was in the middle of the field trying to locate Sharkon wile battling a shark all at once. Then he turned around and saw that he was on the throne. King Plankton swam as fast as he could and pushed Sharkon off the throne. Wile Sharkon was falling of the throne he dropped the trident, at that instant King Plankton grabbed the trident and blowed his horn as loud as he could.

Allya herd the horn and swam as fast as she could toward her father and when he got in sight she saw Sharkon stabbing him in the back with a shark tooth knife. 

“Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!” Allya screamed in horror as she grabbed the trident from her fathers hands and stabbed at Sharkon with it. Allya got so mad that she threw the trident at Sharkon’s head, pinning him to the coral reef by his neck. “You wanted to be king and wanted to take my throne and now you killed my father! Haven’t you done enough?”

Allya grabbed the trident and pushed Sharkon to the ground. She signals to one of the guards in battle to hold Sharkon down. Allya had five minuets to get on the throne and be queen.

She swam to the throne and sat upon it as the sun reached it’s highest peak. When she sat down, the throne and the trident lit up with a golden brilliance and she declared her self Allyera Lie Aquali, Queen of Mermaidia.
